National firefighters strike - Saturday 19 October

There will be another national firefighters strike on Saturday 19 October for five hours from 6.30 to 11.30pm. Kent Fire and Rescue Service will continue to answer and deal with 999 calls, but will not be operating at the normal level of service.  This means it is very important that everyone takes sensible precautions, both at home and at work.  You can also help by passing this safety information on to clients and customers, and friends and family.

Seven things to do to keep you and your family safe from fire:

  1. Before you leave the house on Saturday go round your home and unplug any unused electrical items, don’t overload electric sockets and avoid running appliances such as ovens, washing machines and tumble dryers while your home is unoccupied
  2. Check your smoke alarm
  3. Don’t leave any cooking unattended
  4. If you are planning a bonfire, don’t do it on Saturday
  5. Avoid using candles and certainly do not leave them burning if you’re not in the room
  6. Drive carefully and wear a seatbelt – speed limits aren’t targets
  7. If you are out hiking or walking the dog, stick to safe areas and avoid water and deep mud where you may get into difficulties
